Page numbers, even when the source file is gone
Study notes stitched together from several scans, the minutes of a tenants' meeting, a catalog on its way to the printer – longer documents need numbering. If all you have is the PDF, Page numbers writes the numbers straight onto the pages.
Where the number sits and how it looks
There are six positions: "Top left", "Top center", "Top right", "Bottom left", "Bottom center" and "Bottom right", each roughly 0.4 inch from the edge. There are five formats: the plain number, "- 1 -", "Page 1", "Page 1 of 10" and "1 / 10". The default is black, size 11, bottom center. Font size can be set from 6 to 40, and the color is up to you.
Which number, starting on which page
- "First number" sets where counting begins. If your PDF is part two of something bigger, enter 31, for example.
- "Skip first" leaves the opening pages unnumbered. Enter 2 if the first two pages are a cover and a table of contents – page three then gets your first number.
In formats that show a total, the total is the last number in the sequence. A 12-page file with two pages skipped runs from "Page 1 of 10" to "Page 10 of 10".
Good to know
Pages stored sideways, such as a wide table, are handled: the position is worked out from the way the page is read. Numbers become part of the page and do not follow it if you move it later, so put the file together first with Merge PDF, arrange it with Organize PDF, and number it last. Your original file is not changed; the numbered version downloads as a new document.
Everything happens in your browser; the document is not uploaded.
